The Anxious Generation w/ Jonathan Haidt | The Psychology Podcast
This week Scott is joined by NYU social psychologist and author Dr. Jonathan Haidt. Scott and Jonathan discuss the "great rewiring of childhood" and how it is negatively affecting the mental health of teenagers. They also discuss why a return to play based childhoods are better for kids in the long run and review the criticism of his research with an eye toward nuance and the recommendation of better studies to address one of the most pressing issues of our time.

    Thank you for this fascinating & crucial topic! :) P.s. I am nasty to propose a guest you might enjoy? :) Vivian Dittmar had recently an excellent interview about the balance between transcendence & actualization with John Vervaeke. Vivian could be a super fitting guest for you :)

    Great moment on clarifying the Default Mode Network -- clearly there is an academic confusion on its function but most likely people are speaking to different stages of brain development along "moral maturation." This is a bold claim but John Vervaeke's latest interview with Vivian Dittmar gets at this phenomenologically in her claim to re-emphasize the "personal ego" to counter idolization of the "ego-less enlightenment."

    I think the increase in mental illness is a symptom of being overwhelmed and bombarded by so many ideas before adequately being able to explore their own. People used to have the mid-life crisis like 40-60. Now people are having it like 20-30. And some are probably even having it during the teen phase on top of the rebellious phase, and on top of the identity consolidation phase that are both typically associated with teens. Rather than it being a mental health crisis, I think it's a teen-life crisis which combined with other teen phenomenon is creating mental illness. Except they don't have the security of having already gone through various developmental stages, often including obtaining financal security like someone in their mid-life has. There has to be kids out there who are doing alright, and my guess is that they had the space and guidance and time to develop some resemblance of confidence and authenticity. That they've had the opportunity to explore themselves outside of roles they may have felt mandated to fulfill such as doing well in school. Kids need a sense of reality that they can return to, that can fuel them through life. Or something along these lines, idk. I think though, if there is guidance on how people should navigate the mid-life crisis, i think we'd just have to apply them to kids somehow in addition to the type of stuff Haidt is suggesting. So ya, as Scott says, we need more internal constructive reflection

    Because you mentioned a critical perspective on some Buddhist teaching. Would be great to hear your view on a healthy sense of self. It seems to me that in some branches of Buddhism our sense of self is pathologized & it is often a goal to deconstruct permanently our self. That seems to be not really in alignment with current neuroscience that our sense of self is actually rather useful :D would be amazing to hear your thoughts on that :)

    • @CozmoBeregofsky

      When people say the phrase “the self is an illusion” it can be quite confusing. If it’s rephrased to “the self is an arbitrary construct”, this can be extremely useful and liberating. The goal is an ability to keep the concept of self when it’s helpful, but to notice when it’s not. The deconstruction efforts are designed to help the individual’s direct understanding.

    it depends whether or not you think the values of the world mean that you finish first. What is your definition of finishing first and what is your definition of finishing last? what actually matters? in this video you come across as somebody who is still very much bought into the values that the media and the world say are important. Have these values worked for the world? Have they made people happy? look deeper…

    Interesting discussion, with a lot of nuance. In regard to the dichotomy of ascending descending metaphors. It seems to me a different metaphor might close the gap. I believe my lived experience is undifferentiated from my environment. I find if I seek an internal point of calm or authentic self, it is in direct conflict with being in the moment - it’s internalizing change in absence of the mitigator. If I were to use a metaphor, I would compare it to the ocean. The ocean represents the vast idiosyncratic nature of truth in our environment. And like a boat on the ocean, we rise and fall on waves of experience. I feel it’s our openness to the vagarious nature of truth that keeps us buoyant, allowing us to navigate our sense of self in an ocean of change. I also believe active listening requires open eyes. We communicate so much about ourselves through our actions and micro expressions (which are often out of sync with carefully formulated statements) - to close ones eyes is to internalize the speaker’s words. This post brought to you by procrastination - back to the task at hand. :-)

    I finally finalized my divorce with my narcissistic husband. Unfortunately we do have 4 children together, the youngest being 1, so I am stuck with him for some time, but I no longer am stuck in a state where I know nobody being an at home mother and going without just to satisfy his need for drugs and alcohol. I have come a long way, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I finally can not only see it, but look forward with excitement instead of fear to see whats on the other side. My story has only just begun, at the age of 37... ;

    Being with my ex narc for the past 8 yrs. made me observe this very pattern. I think they wanted to feel very important in a way that is disturbing. Instead of building trust with their intimate partners, they destroy the trust that they built with you (in that case lying when they tried to put you in their pedestal). Once they have a committed partner, they can’t stand being loved authentically by one person. Instead they go on and prey on other women that is susceptible to their love bombing. My ex narc was a compulsive pursuer in a relationship. He would go back and forth to the women he were involved before or try to meet women in complicated situation so that going public isn’t an option while having you as their main supply. In the end they destroy the very person that loved them. They are like toddlers testing your love for them. Showing and telling them you love them isn’t enough, they will cheat on your face to make you feel inadequate even if you are more than they deserve. They want to test your love for them so they keep hurting you and when you have enough of their abuse, you leave. Then they tell you, ‘you never loved me because you abandon me’. Well in fact it’s their actions and narcissistic behavior that made you leave or in other cases they discard you and will give silly reasons of the discard. Mine would use, ‘she’s crazy’, ‘she’s a nega-star’, ‘she insults me’, ‘she cheated on me’ et al. So with this pattern of infidelities and emotional abuse (who knows what else) it’s better to walk away. I did walk away and is now rebuilding my life with our daughter. We are struggling financially because I’m not earning enough to provide for my daughter but now we get to laugh and bring with us sunshine every day. No lies, no abuse and no fake love. We only live once, forgive yourself and move forward but never forget the lesson that narc abuse taught you. That is to respect yourself to walk away from what’s hurting and destroying you. That you deserve a life of solitude, happiness and love. Hugs*** :) Additionally I got to know about my narc husband bad ways when I reach out to a private detective digitalinvestigate@gmail.com for help he did a perfect work for me I can see everything he’s doing on his device.
